I am a proud Canadian.
I didn't realize how much I appreciate Canada wholeheartedly until I moved abroad.
To me, Canadians exude warmth, kindness and love like no other. I always know a Canadian abroad as I can feel their smile, appreciation for others, and awareness of those around them.
Living abroad there were so many times where my interactions with a Canadian changed the course of my travels, and touched me at a truly deep level.
Once when I was traveling from Sweden to Toronto with my infant daughter, I was left speechless by an act of Canadian kindness. I had just entered the waiting area for the second leg of our flight. I was hungry, having just flown 3-hours, and queued in the huge line at the snack area craving Pringles. As we were a couple people away from ordering, we were called to board the plane and had to leave the line, without Pringles, to board. As we were about to hand over our passports, a woman walked over and handed me the very tube of Pringles I had my eye on. A fellow Canadian, she had heard me telling my husband I wanted them, saw me have to leave the line, and bought them for me. I didn't even have words.
Another time, I had been away from home for 7-months, boarding the plane back, I watched as Canadians piled on helping everyone find their seat, smiling at each row as they passed, and acknowledging those around them.
I love going for a run in Canada, where runners etiquette dictates a smile, wave and hello (if you have the breath for it).
I love how we move to the right on the sidewalk well in advance, so that the oncoming party knows we are making space for them.
I love how we interact with those we don't know in line, at restaurants, at the doctors and at the park.
As the world continues to move faster, become more digital, and the rat race continues to heighten, I encourage us to celebrate and hold on to the thing I love most - let's continue to be a nation where we notice those around us, exude warmth, love and kindness for others.
What makes you proud to be a Canadian?
Wishing you a wonderful Canada Day tomorrow!
