When I think about returning to the workforce, I believe the most important piece is to set yourself up to have a positive mindset. What does that mean? It means setting yourself up to feel confident in your return, and have mechanisms in place to support you when you are missing your little one, feeling overwhelmed / nervous / anxious.
Here are five ideas to help maintain a positive mindset as you launch back to the workforce:
2. Clothing - As we welcome a baby our body changes and sometimes everything doesn't go back to exactly where it was pre-baby. Take time in advance to try on your "work wardrobe" and make sure you have some pieces that fit, making your feel confident and comfortable in the clothing you are wearing. Consider setting aside a small budget to buy some new items that will make you feel your very best as you return to work.
3. Celebrate your return - Celebrate your return to work with a dinner out, a date night, a stay-cation, a trip, a new haircut or spa treatment, or your favourite dinner at home. Think of something that is going to make you feel great (and like you are celebrating) and dedicate that experience to your return to work.
4. Photos / Flipgram - As you return to the workforce put together a flipgram / photo album / collage of your favourite memories from your parental leave. When you need to refocus at work, pull it out and remember the terrific times, then refocus on the tasks at hand.
5. Plan Ahead - Research shows us that we get more enjoyment out of planning a trip / activity / weekend plans then we do actually living them. As you head into a new work week plan your upcoming days off, so you can look forward to your plans throughout your work week. When you are missing your little one or family time, focus on getting more excited about your upcoming plans.
