I don't remember who asked the question of our teacher, but someone said, "What are you most proud of?"
She pointed to the wrinkles surrounding her mouth and said simply, "These." She told us they were smile lines, and she was proud of them. Her wrinkles were from a lifetime of happiness and laughter.
She also said smiling creates more wrinkles than frowning, and challenged us a little on what mattered more - the number of wrinkles we had or the process of getting them.
A powerful wrinkle reframe for a 10-year old.
Fast forward to today. I am proud of the beginning of smile lines that grace my face - they are there from my lifetime of smiles and laughter. Each wrinkle tells a story. So when I see the wrinkles forming around my mouth and my eyes, I let them remind me of all the beautiful moments, the roaring laughter, and love fills those lines and my heart.
When you look in the mirror tomorrow, consider looking for the stories your face tells, rather than seeing the wrinkles.
